 Description

Provide absorption spectra from one of the high-resolution atmospheric codes such as MODTRANS or libradtrans in a form that can be used to implement telluric absorption for PFS targets.

Nick Mondrik (nmondrik@gmail.com) from Chris Stubb's group at Harvard has kindly offered to run some models for us:

I can do this fairly straightforwardly at a constant resolution of 1cm^-1 (R=20k at 500nm, c. 25k at 400nm, c. 10k at 1um), if you can tell me:

  • What wavelength grid
  • What PWV grid you want to sample
  • What (if any) aerosol grid you want to sample
  • What zenith angle(s) you want it at
  • What O3 value(s) you want

If you want it at a specific pressure (otherwise I'll just use some reasonable value for an altitude of 4200m).

We need to get back to him with a grid of model parameters. price would like slightly higher resolution, but that turns out to be a little difficult and I think this is good enough for now (and maybe for ever)

I believe this is currently blocked on rhl specifying the grid of parameters.

Taking it back, since rhl is busy. I'll have a go at specifying a parameter grid, and ask Nick and rhl to comment.

I found a useful paper: Atmospheric extinction properties above Mauna Kea from the Nearby Supernova Factory spectro-photometric data set by Buton et al.; note Figure 13, which shows distributions of the atmospheric parameters.

I've proposed the following grid to Nick:

Wavelength: 350-1300 nm, at the agreed constant resolution of 1cm^-1 (https://pfs.ipmu.jp/research/parameters.html)
PWV: 1, 2, 3 mm (http://www.gemini.edu/sciops/telescopes-and-sites/observing-condition-constraints)
Aerosol: tau=0.0075; a=0, 1, 2.5 (arXiv:1210.2619 Fig 13, Fig 19)
Zenith angle: 0, 30, 60, 70 deg
O3: I_O^3 = 260 DU (arXiv:1210.2619 Fig 13, 7.4, Fig 18)
Pressure: 616 mbar (arXiv:1210.2619 Fig 13, 4.1.1)
