Turns out I fixed this on master right after 1.7.5 (in ac121c6)

I took the liberty of releasing a 1.7.6 version to test the motors.

It turned out that another python2=>python3 bug showed up.

It was trivial to fix, so I did it .

The motors are finally working properly.  I've committed the fix on master and released a 1.7.7 version ( I hope you don't mind )
