I need to either add the binaries to the product, or a full build script. Given that the target is the BEE and that there already is a binary in the product it is not obvious that adding binaries is entirely wrong.

In the meanwhile, please run make in the c directory and python setup.py build_ext -i in the python directory.

I think a build script, or instructions.  It's entirely reasonable to ask products to be built (e.g. it's how LSST builds the version.py file, and things won't import without running the build – this is not accidental)
