The ccdActor does not notice that the FPGA has not been imaged or is for some reason inoperative – it simply writes into /dev/null PCI "registers" and only really notices when an image read does not do anything, There are ways to write into the card space and read back from it. Use one of them and blow up early (on actor launch).
